Mercedes Lucero previously published the chapbook In the Garden of Broken Things (Flutter Press). She is a winner of the Langston Hughes Creative Writing Award for Poetry, was a Glimmer Train "Short Fiction Award" Finalist, and has received several Pushcart Prize nominations. She helps curate the Big Tent Reading Series held in Lawrence, KS, serves as the Nonfiction Editor of Beecher's Magazine, and is a member of BLACK Lawrence, an arts collective that seeks to elevate the dialogue around the meaning of being a black artist and creating black art. She holds a Doctorate in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Kansas.
