Another New Calligraphy seeks work exploring the human experience, our internal worlds, and life among others; these complex systems are often clearest in our slightest moments.
Please familiarize yourself with recent projects for a sense of these themes and their past expression. While the catalog's niche may seem primarily poetic, other modes of expression are more than welcome. The press is always on the lookout for more music and nonfiction, as well as further opportunities to broaden the inclusivity of its community. Marginalized creators are highly encouraged to consider Another New Calligraphy as a home for their work.
General Guidelines
Submissions are always open and always free.
Please send your materials to anc@anothernewcalligraphy.com
Identify the submission type in your email; include a brief bio and/or personal links to provide context for your work.
Provide a concise overview of your project in the body of your message; empty or vague emails will not be considered.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please withdraw your work if it is accepted elsewhere.
The press does not publish work featuring hate toward any group or individual, including animals. Gratuitous violence, sex, and substance use is neither edgy nor interesting.
All artwork is created in-house. If you have a project and its visuals ready to go, find a way to finish it yourself! The end result will be so much more rewarding than letting a publisher somehow interfere with your vision.
Submissions are considered as soon as possible; response time varies. Please wait three months to inquire, though you may receive a message earlier.
Books
Given the principles behind Another New Calligraphy's books and their production, shorter manuscripts are preferred. Typical published length averages at sixty pages, though extreme variations occur. Some have been collaboratively edited to reach a distillation of their writer's intent. Thematically linked projects are favored over generalized collections.
Impossible Task
Another New Calligraphy's online journal publishes short works including but not limited to poetry, nonfiction, interviews, flash fiction, and music—visuals are always welcome! All material is connected in its exploration of conflict, a term open to interpretation though ever present in these increasingly challenging times. For written material, please send no more than roughly five pages.
While the arts have an important role in our lives, they are at their very best when they facilitate support for those in need.
To mark its tenth anniversary in 2019, Another New Calligraphy began embedding fundraising efforts in its projects. $1 per sale of each book is now donated to a thematically relevant nonprofit. See individual book pages in the catalog to learn more about past beneficiaries.
Another New Calligraphy is based in Chicago and was founded by Bill Ripley in 2009.
In addition to his creative pursuits, he has worked in the city's schools for many years—first as an elementary educator and currently as a counselor providing therapeutic services. In his own youth, he fondly recalls the comfort of losing himself in books and wanting nothing more than to create his own. Contact Bill at anc@anothernewcalligraphy.com
