Nathaniel Curtis abandoned his early plans to join the family business (the ministry), became an atheist, and got excommunicated. He studied philosophy and religion at Queens College in New York. He has worked as a bartender, as a director of arts and science nonprofits, as an editor, as the cofounder of a creative agency, and as an arborist and quarantine specialist for the USDA. Currently, he works as a climber in Alaska.
